ONE PRACTICAL SCOPE FROM GROUNDWORKS TO HANDOVER

Plan

Review the premises, route, plans, nbn information and scope boundaries.

Build

Coordinate suitable pits, conduit, trenching, bends and building entries.

Prepare

Install draw rope and leave a clear passive pathway for future carrier cabling.

Hand Over

Reinstate agreed areas and provide useful completion records for the project.

WHAT IS NBN PIT & PIPE?

A clear underground route from the network boundary to the building.

NBN pit and pipe is the passive infrastructure that allows telecommunications cable to be pulled safely through a property. Depending on the site, this may include a lead-in conduit from the boundary, communications pits, underground distribution conduits and individual building-entry pathways.

It is not the active nbn service. Fibre, the property connection device, NTD and service activation are normally completed separately by nbn and the chosen retail service provider.

1. Network Boundary

The nominated connection point at the street or development boundary.

2. Lead-in Conduit

The underground conduit pathway from the boundary toward the premises.

3. Pits and Distribution

Accessible draw points and branches for larger or multi-premise developments.

4. Building Entry

Conduit, draw rope and a nominated external telecommunications entry point.

A correctly planned pathway reduces delays when the nbn connection team attends later.

WHEN YOU MAY NEED NBN CONDUIT WORK

Common reasons a connection cannot move forward.

Most enquiries start with a new build, a failed nbn appointment, a damaged lead-in conduit or a development that needs a permanent communications pathway.

New Home or Building

The property needs a compliant NBN lead-in conduit before the external service cable can be installed.

  • Boundary-to-building pathway
  • P20 lead-in conduit where specified
  • External entry point planning

Failed NBN Appointment

The nbn technician has identified a missing, blocked, damaged or unsuitable communications pathway.

  • Review the reported problem
  • Inspect the proposed route
  • Prepare the pathway for reattendance

Strata or Multi-Unit Site

Several premises need a shared distribution route with pits and branches to nominated building entries.

  • Main lead-in and distribution pits
  • P50 / P20 branches where designed
  • Draw ropes to each nominated entry

Damaged or Blocked Conduit

Existing conduit may need proving, repair, replacement or a new route before cable can be pulled.

  • Route investigation
  • Conduit repair or replacement scope
  • Rod-and-rope / draw-rope preparation

Driveway or Landscape Works

A communications route needs to be installed or altered before paving, concrete or landscaping is completed.

  • Coordinate the route early
  • Plan cover and crossings
  • Reduce avoidable rework later

Commercial Development

A shop, office, warehouse or mixed-use project needs the carrier pathway coordinated with the wider build.

  • Plans and building-entry review
  • Pit and conduit distribution
  • Handover information for the next contractor

Completion Records

Provide useful photos, route information and handover notes for the completed passive infrastructure.

WHICH NBN PATHWAY DO YOU NEED?

The right scope depends on the number of premises and the approved connection route.

Send the address, development plans and any nbn notice or marked-up drawing you have. We can help identify the likely pathway scope before the quote is prepared.

Single Premise Lead-In

An individual lead-in conduit from the property boundary to the external telecommunications point.

Multi-Premise Pit & Pipe

A shared main pathway with distribution pits and branches for strata, grouped dwellings or commercial sites.

Building Pathway

Conduit from the external entry point toward the internal nbn or communications location where required.

Repair or Replacement

A targeted fix for blocked, collapsed, damaged or incomplete lead-in conduit and pit infrastructure.

BUILT AROUND CURRENT PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The small details determine whether the cable can be installed later.

The approved design and current nbn requirements always take priority. The following are common planning points—not a substitute for a project-specific drawing or carrier approval.

P20 Lead-In Conduit

White telecommunications conduit is commonly used for an individual lead-in pathway.

P50 Distribution Conduit

Larger conduit is commonly used between pits or for a main development pathway.

Cover and Crossings

Common minimum cover increases beneath driveways and must suit the route and current requirements.

Bends and Drawability

Bend radius, bend count and pit placement affect whether the future cable can be pulled safely.

Service Separation

The communications route must maintain suitable separation from electrical and other underground services.

Indicative guide: a typical lead-in may use P20 conduit, draw rope, no more than three 90-degree bends, a generous bend radius and minimum cover that increases under vehicle areas. We confirm the applicable requirements before work starts.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT • EAST VICTORIA PARK

Housing Authority WA: passive NBN pathways for six residential units.

Western Technology managed the delivery and handover of permanent passive communications pathways for the future NBN reconnection of a six-unit residential site.

The completed scope created a clear route from the street frontage through the property and into three nominated building-entry points. Draw ropes were left accessible for the later carrier cabling stage, and the disturbed landscaped and pathway areas were reinstated.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

NBN Pit & Pipe Installation Perth FAQs

Plain-English answers about lead-in conduit, P20 and P50 pipe, trenching, nbn responsibilities and project pricing.

NBN pit and pipe is the passive underground infrastructure used to create a telecommunications cable pathway. It can include communications pits, P20 or P50 conduit, bends, draw rope, distribution branches and the conduit entry at the building. The active nbn cable and service are normally installed separately.
A lead-in conduit is usually the individual pathway from the property boundary to one premises. Pit and pipe generally describes a wider development pathway with one or more communications pits and conduit runs serving multiple lots, units or buildings. The approved nbn design determines the actual arrangement.
The pit-and-pipe contractor prepares the passive pathway. Nbn or its appointed delivery contractor normally installs the carrier cable and external nbn equipment later, with service activation arranged through the chosen retail service provider. Your quotation will make the scope boundary clear.
P20 white telecommunications conduit is commonly used for an individual lead-in or branch. P50 is commonly used for a main development route or between communications pits. The correct size, route and pit arrangement must follow the current nbn requirements and the project design.
The required cover depends on the route, surface type and current project requirements. As a general guide, common nbn lead-in details show at least 300 mm cover in non-vehicle areas and greater cover under driveways. We confirm the applicable requirement before installation rather than relying on a generic depth.
Suitable scopes can include investigating the existing route, proving the conduit, repairing a damaged section, replacing an unsuitable pathway or planning an alternative route. Photos and any notes from the nbn technician are useful starting information.
Yes, suitable projects can include a shared lead-in route, distribution pits, P50 and P20 conduit branches and nominated building-entry points for multiple dwellings. Formal nbn design or portal requirements must be confirmed for the development.
Reinstatement can be included where agreed. The quotation will identify which surfaces are included and whether specialist paving, concrete, asphalt, landscaping or traffic-control work needs a separate allowance or contractor.
Cost depends on the route length, number and type of pits, conduit size, trench depth, surface type, existing services, access, reinstatement, approvals and the number of premises. Send the address and plans for a project-specific quote.
A simple lead-in can be much quicker than a multi-unit pit-and-pipe build. Timing depends on design information, approvals, service locating, access, excavation, ground conditions, reinstatement and material availability. We provide an estimated program with the quote.
Some development work and nbn portal activities require a suitably trained or authorised supplier. Western Technology will confirm the role it can perform for your project and identify any formal nbn design, approval or trained-supplier requirement before the scope is accepted. We do not present the passive pathway work as the active nbn network connection.
Send the property address, number of premises, site or architectural plan, any nbn service plan or defect notice, photos of the frontage and proposed route, known underground services, required building-entry location and the target date. If you only have part of this information, send what you have.
